To say I’m just a “yoga teacher” feels flat, but that’s still what I say if someone asks. I’m not sure where the yoga ends and where it begins. To try and explain to someone who’s taken one yoga class and written it off, that not all yoga is created equal is like fighting an uphill battle.
I don’t care so much to be understood anymore. When people ask me to explain the style of yoga I teach, I usually just tell them to come be my guest and try it out. Sometimes I find that having a conversation with someone and listening to what they have to say can be more beneficial at times than them going to a yoga class.
So it’s never the same answer. What we need now isn’t what we needed a year ago. What I used to consider being a “yoga teacher” has become something I have yet to find the words for. Instead of trying to explain who we are, maybe instead we can continue to soften into who we’re becoming.
